This year’s success for the Newport Boys Soccer team has come primarily from 2 seniors: center mid-fielder Jose Gonzalez, and goal-keeper Luis Reyes. Both are captains on this year’s squad, and both also played key roles in the Cubs back to back State Championships in 2016 and 2017.
#21 Jose Gonzalez is a 4-year Varsity Starter and 1st Team All-State for the last 2 years. Jose has continued to elevate his play and increase his presence on the field on the back half of the 2018 season. His instinctive play-making is creating opportunities for his teammates all over the field. He is a tenacious player defensively, whose great vision and distribution skills make him dangerous in every part of the field. Jose is a master at winning 50/50 challenges and prides himself on controlling the middle of the field. His dominating control of the ball allows him to consistently and quickly attack opposing defenses. His statistics for the season demonstrate his balance in the offense; Jose has scored 9 goals on the season to go along with his 10 assists. Jose “Chipito” Gonzalez has the ability to provide the Cubs team with the spark they will need to succeed in today’s playoff game versus the Ontario Tigers.
#101 Luis Reyes is also a 4-year Varsity Starter for the Newport Cubs. A 1st Team All-State selection last year, Luis was 2nd Team All-State as a sophomore when the cubs won their first State Championship in a penalty shoot-out against Madras. Luis is again playing exceptional this season, and Newport Head Coach Ollie Richardson describes him as “impossible for us to replace next year.” His distribution from the keeper position is highly intelligent and pairs nicely with his vocal leadership. He has great anticipation, reaction speed, and is always in the right spot. “If we go to PK’s we have a huge advantage because he is like superman in the biggest high pressure moments and always comes through” says his coach. Luis is averaging over 2 saves per PK shootout over the past 2 seasons, an unreal statistic at any level. “A goalkeeper of this caliber only comes along once in a coaching career”, says his coach, “but I am looking forward to helping Luis find a team for him to join and start his collegiate journey. He will be an awesome addition to whichever team lands him.”
